CKS - Proud to be Salesian
May 2010

Christ the King Catholic School celebrated its Salesian spirit last week when special guests Fr. Dennis Donovan, SDB, and Sister Nivia visited and spent time with our school family.  We were reminded of the six ways to be Salesian and potentially even saintly:
  • Cheerfulness
  • Do my duties well
  • Jesus is present in the Eucharist
  • Love and honor Mary
  • Be kind to others
  • Serve rather than be served

We thank them for spending time with us and encouraging the Salesian ideals that make our school so special.  We were blessed to have the Salesian sisters at our school for almost 30 years and are grateful for their willingness to continue to be an important part of CKS.

CKS Drama Club Wows
with
Alice in Wonderland
April 2010

The CKS Drama Club under the leadership of Mrs. Vivan Kimbler, assisted by 5th grade teacher Ms. Suzanne Smith, performed Alice in Wonderland to a sold-out crowd last week.  The group of 6th, 7th and 8th graders did everything from lighting and sound to stage set up in addition to their acting roles.  They were excited to be able to perform on a refurbished stage including a new theater curtain!  In addition to their sold out performance, they were on stage for two showings to CKS students and a matinee performance on May 4.  Congratulations to our cast and crew on incredible theatrical performances!

CKS Carnival

We enjoyed a beautiful weekend of riding the rides, great food, entertainment and fellowship during CTK Parish Carnival.  The carnival is a South Tampa tradition that celebrated its 47th year of fun for the whole community.

The Gift of Catholic Education
March 2010

Christ the King has a long held tradition of providing an excellent Catholic education to families through our parish school.  With the realization that Catholic education is a financial sacrifice for some families, The Pride Scholarship Fund was created to give the gift of Catholic education to parish families that might otherwise not be able to attend CKS because of financial need.

The Pride Scholarship Fund is supported primarily through the Lion Links Open Golf Tournament and private donations.  On March 3, despite gale-force winds and un-Florida like cold weather, the LLO, chaired by Charlotte and Paul Maddox, had a successful 8th tour and netted close to $25,000 for tuition assistance.  We extend our sincere thanks to the school families and businesses whose generosity will make the difference in the lives of several children who attend CKS.  Thanks to the many golfers, volunteers and donors who supported this great event.

CKS… Confident.  Kind.  Spirited.
Catholic Schools Week
February 2010

Christ the King Catholic School students spent a week celebrating the dynamic influence our Catholic faith plays in our school setting.  Playing off the acronym PRIDE (we are the CKS Lions!), the week included themes of Prayer, Respect, Inspiration, Dedication and Excellence that were lived out through:

  • Classroom service projects including prayers cards for the homebound, food collections for local food banks, relief collection for Haiti and cards for the military
  • School Mass with our Dads
  • CKS School Clean-up Day
  • Pep rally planned and led by our Student Government Association that gave our younger students a look at all of the sports and activities CKS offers
  • Student showcase to highlight our 8th graders

The week culminated in a video produced by students that was shown at the weekend Masses.

CKS Spirit Shines
January 2010

Christ the King Catholic School celebrated the feast of their patron saint - St. John Bosco - with Field Day on January 29.  Each class faced obstacle courses, endured competitive games of tug-of-war, hopped for their lives in three-legged races, faced trivia challenges and pedaled furiously in tricycle races in a chance to outscore a rival class.  Students also donated dozens of shoes for Seeds of Hope in the Dominican Republic and earned more points for their classroom team in the process.  Special thanks to Field Day chair Elaine Sumner and her team of parent volunteers for a great, spirit filled day.

CKS Principal Shares a Cultural Ceremony with Care Club

 January 2010

Mr. Gerad Carrier, who joined CKS as principal this year after six years as a high school principal at the Canadian Academy in Japan, brought more than his wealth of experience and vision for our parish school with him when he arrived in Florida.  He also packed his Chado utensils - used in the traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony -- in the hope that he would have the opportunity to prepare and serve a simply delicious bowl of tea.

Last week, he and his wife Rhonda had the opportunity to share the Japanese Tea Ceremony with members of Care Club.  Carrier described that to the uninitiated, the Japanese Tea Ceremony may appear forced, tedious and even contrived. At its very core however, it is all about serving others through a dedicated craft.  The Way of Tea, the Carriers explained, is the call to take the time to ensure that whatever you do offers the greatest possible benefit for others, and to remember to be thankful for things received. It is expressed in the sincere and simple act of preparing and serving a bowl of tea and receiving it with gratitude.

CKS Students Treated to JAMM (John Angotti Music Ministry)
January 2010

John Angotti, a published composer, accomplished pianist, and winner of three Unity Awards from the United Catholic Music and Video Association (UCMVA), shared his music ministry with CKS recently.  His contemporary Christian rock inspired CKS students and faculty.  He had them singing along and asking when he would be back again!

CKS Dads and Students Deliver a Merry Christmas to Deserving Children
December 2009

CKS students eagerly anticipated our traditional "Dads with Donuts" Toy Drive last week.  As dads bearing donuts joined our students in the pavilion for morning assembly, Sister Maryanne from Villa Madonna set the tone for the day with an Advent message that encouraged us to rely on our Blessed Mother Mary in all things.   Then in a generous show of Christmas giving, our students donated hundreds of toys for the Christ the King and St. Peter Claver Chapters of St. Vincent de Paul, Salesian Youth Center and Redlands Christian Migrant Association.  The Toy Drive is held in partnership with the Parish Toy Drive.

Third Grade Gets a
Lesson in Rosary Making
October 2009

Mrs. Yarnold's CKS 3rd grade class got a visit from a member of the Rosary Makers last week.  This special visitor (who is also a grandmother of one of the students) taught the class about the significance of this special parish ministry as well as how to make their own rosaries.  All of the rosaries will be mailed overseas to two of their classmates' dads who are currently serving in the military.

CKS Dads Club Lunch
October 2009

On Friday, October 23, CKS dads joined their children for a hot dog lunch in the pavilion.  Special thanks to the CKS Dads Club and to Catering by the Family for hosting this great annual event.  With an unwavering presence and a spirit of generosity, the Dads Club lunch is another example of how CKS parents continue to make a lasting impact on Christ the King Catholic School throughout its 60 year history.

Salesian Youth Rally
September 2009

Salesian sisters, priests and brothers have had a long history in Tampa Bay and the Diocese of St. Petersburg, running Villa Madonna School, St. Joseph Catholic School, Mary Help of Christians, and St. Petersburg Catholic High School in addition to their 30 years of service at CKS. As a way to celebrate the Salesian character of these schools, for the past five years CKS has joined with Villa Madonna and St. Joseph for a Salesian Youth Rally. On September 25, over 800 young people including CKS 3rd through 8th graders celebrated the spirit of St. John Bosco through prayer, fellowship and fun at the rally.

CKS Students Get a Boost and Raise Funds for Their School
 September 2009

CKS students walked, skipped and ran around a specially designed track during Hillsborough County's first Boosterthon Fun Run last week.  The Boosterthon program incorporates education, character and fitness into a week-and-a half long program where they are encouraged to take the initiative to solicit pledges for laps that they will run.  The program builds in an educational and character theme and culminates in the Boosterthon Fun Run where children run an average 25-35 laps.

CKS 8th Graders Serve our Community
August 2009
On Friday, August 28, CKS 8th graders gave their time and talents in service to five different Tampa area outreach organizations.  In the spirit of St. John Bosco, and under the protection of Mary Help of Christians, the 54 students assisted at Faith Café; America's Second Harvest; Arden Courts of Tampa; The Children's Cancer Center; and, Pregnancy Plus Medical.

Arden Courts Program Services Coordinator raved about our students, "We had a great time today with the students - the residents were talking about it during lunch. The students were very respectful, caring, and pleasant. I wanted to thank everyone again from the bottom of my heart for really showing the residents how important they are.  They did represent their school with pride ...Cheers to you CHRIST THE KING!"

Helping others is a recurrent theme in many of our school programs and special events.  Special thanks to parents Dorothy Alfonso and Ellen Hochschwender for organizing such enriching activities, which help deepen our students' awareness of and compassion for those in need.
